Mumps.

Well, my 3 yr old is doing it now, she just came over and asked me to tie a thread around her head (from chin to top of the head) and when I asked her why, she told me she was playing that she had the mumps. I asked her where she learned that game, and she told me she had the mumps when she was in school, and then went off to continue her game.

She's playing both halves...
One person asks "why do you have that on your head"
then she replies "Because I have the mumps"
"oh, ok, Want to play dollies?"

Now it's just normal dolly play, except for the string on her head.

LOL....Well I remember playing doctors and nurses with my own special ointment (washing up liquid...LOL), but never pretending to have mumps

It's somewhat interesting because she has had no contact with the mumps. I don't know anyone who has had them, and to the best of my knowledge she hasn't had contact on tv with them.

Dear Galadriel, I had to laugh when I read your story. It could truly be a past life remembrance, because, first of all, with the vaccines available now (babies get one at 15 months usually) I'm not sure children get the mumps that often, or that you would routinely hear about it.

What was funny, was that she wanted a string around her face, which is a very old fashioned way of relieving the pain of mumps (by tying a salt-bag cloth around the jaw-to head type manner).

Okay, when she does some more "stuff" be sure and tell us.

Oh, no worry there, I don't keep a regular notebook of things the kids do. Every time one of them (and until now it's only been my son--I've got a couple of entries for him) does something I go running for the computer to record it here.

Guess that's why they made me a mod huh?

Thanks for your insight Barbra. I had just been asking Megan the other day why people used to put strings and cloths around their heads when they had the mumps. Thank goodness we're protected against things like that now.

Hi All

I never knew that Barbara…all I remember about Mumps (at 5 or 6 years-old I believe) is crawling to my bedroom one night because I didn’t have the energy to walk, eventuating in getting carried around by my Dad for a week (I probably milked it completely…LOL) and hallucinating all the time, giving plenty of laughs to everyone around me, because I spoke total gibberish….LOL

I never knew the connection to the string round the throat….now I do

Hey folks! I'm almost 70 years old and FULL of useless information.. lol. You get a ton of it by the time your my age.

And Kelly, you probably were very sick. The viral infection can sometimes go into encephalitis, so it can be pretty serious. Of course, you probably know about mumps "going down" on adolescent and adult males (which causes sterility), that's why its usually better for kids to get mumps when they are little. I know they give the vaccination to babies at 15 months (MMR) and maybe again at 12 years to avoid that going down thing.

I knew kids used to get things tied around thier chins when they had mumps because I'd seen it in pictures from around the 50's when my mom was a kid, but I didn't know what the reasoning was. Actualy I remember thinking at the time (I was still in grade school) that they were trying to reduce the swelling or something. Which I suppose seems logical enough. I had no idea that it was some sort of pain remedy. Did it work?

Galadriel, I had the mumps (in the 30's) and I just remember hurting, and wearing salt bags around my throat. A bandana or square would help hold it in place. My grandmother was always sewing bags to put salt in (different sizes to fit the area). Salt was supposed to reduce the swelling. Salt bags really good for earaches.

Hey, how many of you still gargle warm salt water for sore throat to reduce the swelling and pain?

That's all I know.

You know Barbara, all of this talk has suddenly struck a memory....I remember salt bags, and I remember making them...but I was only young when I had the mumps....boy, I better check with my mum, because otherwise, this memory is not from where I think it is....LOL

Life is full of surprises

Kelly, that is funny. You know, maybe a lot of us have some kind of recall about medical treatment that was actually done in a former life.
