Reincarnation music/Songs about reincarnation (merged)

There's a Tony Banks* song called "Still It Takes Me By Surprise" that I think could be about reincarnation. However, it could be about nearly anything. He is not the most straightforward lyricist in the world... and that's quite possibly the understatement of the millennium.

Anyway...

Still It Takes Me By Surprise

It can be strange
In the world we live in
So many things are not how they appear
We sit and talk
Of what it doesn't matter
The meaning of the words we use
hides behind the sound

Yet still it takes me by surprise
How the feelings overtake me and fill my mind
With thoughts which even now I can't control
How simple words and gestures
make the world seem right
No matter what they say

It's hard to believe
That once we met as strangers
Not knowing of the life that we would share
You lead me on
Through new ways unfamiliar
Or down a road we travelled many times before

Yet still it takes me by surprise
How the feelings overtake me and fill my mind
With thoughts which even now I can't control
How simple words and gestures
make the world seem right
No matter what they say

As the years go by
Older yet no wiser
Our hearts and minds remain as they once were
And after all the time
That we have been together
So many times we must have been this way before

Yet still it takes me by surprise
How the feelings overtake me and fill my mind
With thoughts which even now I can't control
How simple words and gestures
Make the world seem right
No matter what they say

*You don't know who Tony Banks is? Shame on you. Get thee to Google.

Van Halen "Best of Both Worlds"

Yes, I found a Van Halen Song that mentions Reincarnation... (Best of Both Worlds!)

I don't know what I've been livin' on, but
It's not enough to fill me up
I need more than just words can say
I need everything this life can give me. Hey-hey yeah
'Cause sometimes it's not enough. Ow!

Come on baby, close your eyes, let go
This can be everything we dreamed
It's not work that makes it work, oh
No, let the magic do the work for you

'Cause honey, something reached out and touched me
Now I know all I want

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
We'd have heaven right here on earth. Woo!

Well, there's a picture in a gallery of
A fallen angel looked a lot like you
We forget where we come from sometimes
I had a dream it was really you

Something reached out and touched me
Now I know all I want

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
A little bit o' heaven right here on earth, oh

Whoa, you don't have to die an' go to heaven
Or hang around to be born again
Just tune in to what this place has got to offer
'Cause we may never be here again. Ow!

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
A little heaven right here on earth. Come on!

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
We can have the best of both worlds
A little heaven right here on earth, yeah

Tell me, is it enough? Wow!
Now will it ever be enough? Wow-oh-oh-oh-ooh-ooh

I would recommend the whole 5150 cd, its my favorite! My favorite song on there is Dreams! :D

Love everybody right now

A lovely song from the Dave Clark Five - an anthem for flower children everywhere:-

Everybody get together

Love is but a song to sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Some may come and some may go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now...

If you hear the song I sing
You will understand (listen!)
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now..

Here is Sting, really like this song.

"A thousand years"

A thousand years, a thousand more,
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
An endless turning stairway climbs
To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face

A million roads, a million fears
A million suns, ten million years of uncertainty
I could speak a million lies, a million songs,
A million rights, a million wrongs in this balance of time
But if there was a single truth, a single light
A single thought, a singular touch of grace
Then following this single point , this single flame,
The single haunted memory of your face

I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head

I may be numberless, I may be innocent
I may know many things, I may be ignorant
Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
Reborn as fortunes child to judge anothers crimes
Or wear this pilgrims cloak, or be a common thief
Ive kept this single faith, I have but one belief

I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head
On and on the mysteries unwind themselves
Eternities still unsaid

My favourite would be Marty Robbins songs El Paso and El Paso city. I love the way he wrote the second one to be the reincarnation of the cowboy he sang about in the first one. I think that was really well done.

Does anyone know of anymore songs that relate to reincarnation?.

I was listening to this earlier today. It has some strange lyrics, but interesting ones as well.

“St. Charles”

by Jefferson Starship

Let me tell you about a dream

You know I saw her in a dream

Oh, St. Charles sings

Sings about love

St. Charles, tell me tonight

Won't you tell me 'bout love

You know I saw her in a dream

There was China, in her eyes

In a silk and velvet disguise

She was moving like a lady

Lookin' like a dragon princess

She was walkin'

Walkin' by the river

Rolling in a rhythm of love

I never felt like this before;

I'll never stop, I just want more.

Oh, St. Charles sings,

Sings about love.

St. Charles, tell me tonight,

Won't you tell me about love.

You know I saw her in a dream.

I was shanghaied by her way,

Hypnotized by the things she would say,

In the moonlight by the water,

We were like lovers from another lifetime

Is it only a vision?

Ah, it feels like a prison,

Just the spell of a demon and I can't get away.

Oh, St. Charles sings,

Sings about love.

St. Charles, tell me tonight,

Won't you tell me 'bout love.

Please tell me 'bout love.

I saw her in a dream.

Please tell me 'bout love.

I know I saw her in a dream....

Dream....

Let me take you,

To another place,

Another time,

Another world of people, dancing in rhyme,

Dance in the air, six-fingered webbed,

Fair as the air.

She is the storm bringer, yeah.

The storm changer. Yeah.

Tie, yourself down to the main mast.

Tie, yourself down to the main mast.

Like Ulysses in the water storm,

Winds coming' down the main line.

Tie, yourself down to the main mast,

Tie it down with love.

Tie it down with love.

Don't you feel it, storming'?

I feel it coming, storming'.

I can feel it now, storming',

Don't you feel it coming', storming'?

I was thinking of this thread just the other day.....

P!NK

"The One That Got Away"

from "I'm Not Dead" in 2006

Mmmm mm yeah

Oh oh

I stood by the exit door of the hotel café

He was playing with his band

I've always been a sucker had a weakness for a boy with a guitar and a drink in his hand

His words were like heaven in my hurricane

My knees buckled under

I thought everyone was watching me

Watching you save my life with the song

You were mine

In the back of my mind

Oh just for one night

Just for a while

There's always one that gets away

The one that sneaks up on you that slips away

Two weeks later I was sitting in his apartment

He was making cappuccino

I said what kind of man makes cappuccino

We laughed

We laughed

We laughed

We laughed 'til tears ran down my face

Oh but my man you're someone else's man

And that ain't the man that I want

But you keep drawing me in with those big brown lying eyes

You'll always be mine

In the back of my mind

Oh we had a night

Just a little while

There's always one that gets away

The one that sneaks up on you that slips away

In a closed off corner of my heart yes

I'll always see your face

The one that got away

One that got away

The one that got away

The one that got away

Oh the one that got away

The one that got away

Oh the one that got away

The one that got away

Oh the one that got away

Yeah yeah

Oh oh oh oh

Yeah yeah

Oh

I'm not a victim of clichés

I don't believe in soul mates

Happy endings only one

Oh and I met you and all that changed

I had a taste and you're still sitting on the tip of my tongue

You were mine

Somewhere in time

I'll look for you first

In my next life

There's always one that gets away

The one that sneaks up on you that slips away

Slips away

In a closed off corner of my heart yeah yeah yeah yeah

I I'll always see your face

The one that got away

The one that got away

The one that got away

The one that got away

Oh the one that got away

The one that got away

Oh the one that got away

The one that got away

The one that got away

Yeah yeah

Oh oh yeah

The one that got away

I know what you all are thinking--- WHAT?!? VanH isn't obsessed with Van Halen anymore, well you're right, I listened to them so much it was obsessive, now I can't really stand it. :D But I found better music!

It's quite a surprise to see how all these songs holds elements of reincarnation. I was especially surprised to see it in the P!nk-song  :D It makes me wonder if these 'popstars' actually believe in reincarnation or whether it's just a clicheé in song-writing :) Interesting.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the American progressive rock band, Kansas. Several of their songs quite explicitly refer to reincarnation.

Lonewolf

I am a singer/songwriter

I am a singer/songwriter and after my life changing experience I felt like I was suppose to write songs of reincarnation. One of those is Egyptian Memories:

I walked across the desert on velvet sun kissed sands.

I rode upon a camel across the vacant land.

I sailed on the nile with crocodiles floating so near.

Sometimes in my silence egyptian sounds I still can hear.

I layed beneath the palm trees watching children on the banks.

I danced for noble people and to the gods I gave my thanks.

I wore the finest silks and stones and smelled of sweet perfume.

I bathed in nile waters underneath a full lit moon.

..........................

The Love

When I look into your eyes and gaze upon your face.

My heart begins to travel to another time and place.

Where we shared our life together, where we shared our hopes and dreams.

Now we found eachother once again, as we planned it so it seems.

And the love that we share, is deeper than the seas we've crossed.

And the love that we know. Is a love that's never lost.

And since the day I first saw you, standing there so beautifully.

You caputured me from that day one and you will not let me be.

And the love that we share, is deeper than the seas we've sailed.

And the love that we know, conquers all and never fails.

And since the day I first saw you standing in the morning sun.

Our eyes they met eachother and I knew.....You were the one.

.................

This is just a couple that I wrote....I have free clips of these and others on my music website...so if you are interested just email me...I'm not here promoting my music.or anything. I've been part of this forum for a good while... I just simply wanted to respond how I think music about reincarnation is very "healing" and am only too happy to share my music with like minded folks. :)

Peace,

Ozzy

My daughter just showed me this song about reincarnation by Ozzy Ozbourne.

Back On Earth

I have fallen from grace, and my ashes are scattered

No longer of passion and flesh

My flame is alive, though my wings have been shattered

They lay my body to rest

My spirit is breathing, my senses are pure

Like reincarnation, my soul will endure

Back on earth...

The spirit, it never lets go

Like fountains of sorrow, the faces are crying

I'm witnessing all of their pain

Death is so final, for only the living

The spirit will always remain

Bury me deep, just to cover my sins

My soul is redeemed, as the journey begins

Back on earth (you feel me)

Back on earth (reveal me)

Back on earth, the spirit it never lets go

Another dimension, a river of life

I'm twisting, I'm turning, my soul is in flight

Back on earth (you feel me)

Back on earth (reveal me)

Back on earth (still breathing)

Back on earth (reliving)

"It's Only Life After All"

Carol said:
Also, the Indigo Girls have a song called "Galileo" with a plaintive refrain, "how long 'til my soul gets it right?" They actually mention the word "reincarnation" in it. Good music, too.

Carol
(I'm listening to the Indigo Girls as I write this)

When I was much younger (early or mid teens) I checked out their Retrospective album, having heard of them through a friend of my mom's who thought I'd like their music. Of course, being that I was a dark and brooding teen at the time, I gravitated toward the darker songs on the album such as 'Kid Fears'. Now that I am older and (hopefully) more mature, I have found so much resonance with the things that Emily and Amy write about. 'Galileo' is such an incredible song, and oftentimes I find myself almost pleading, 'How long until my soul gets it right?!'. If I had choose another song of theirs that makes me think of reincarnation, I'd have to pick 'Closer to Fine'. Some of the lyrics seem to reflect my own personal journey for spiritual and personal awareness (I feel like mindfulness is a better word), and how going through all of the normal systems of finding these things has not been working, but that the more I seek and the less I find, the 'closer I am to fine', being more settled with being myself, instead of trying to be a reflection of others' desires of who I should be. Their songs are also quite easy to play on guitar ;)

I am wondering how many others here have been very inspired to 'spirituality' because of song lyrics or the words of a poem, or maybe just instrumental music? Maybe it's just me...

The first song that popped into my head was Erykah Badu's,

Next lifetime
. It seems the video suggested it, too, but I don't recall for sure if it showed them in diff. lifetimes. Because this post is too long if I include the entire song, I will only include relevant pieces and you all can look up the rest of the lyrics.

The song is about her wanting to be with a man, but she is taken. Since she can't be with him this lifetime she says, "I guess I'll see you next lifetime " multiple times.

The end of the song says,

"

I guess I'll see you next lifetime

Already

I'm going to be there

I guess I'll see you next lifetime

I'm going to look for you
"

and then after the chorus comes in again it says,

"

I guess I'll see you next lifetime

Oh

Oh baby

I'm gonna be there

I'm gonna be there
"

Second thing I thought of was Taylor Swift's, Love Story. There are hints in it, but the video suggests it a lot, too. Here are some pieces from it that are relevant.

"We were both young when I first saw you.

I close my eyes and the flashback starts:
"

and

"We were both young when I first saw you..."

I realize these can refer to memories, but #1 she's still young, and #2, the video seemed to suggest reincarnation to me.

Then I remembered, Paula Cole's, I Don't Wanna Wait. Again it is somewhat suggestive, but I have actually heard it was intentionally suggestive of reincarnation. See pieces of the lyrics below":

"She had two babies

One was six months one was three

In the war of '44
"

It goes on with this theme of talking about a woman who lived before.

Then the chorus goes,

"I don't want to wait

For our lives to be over

I want to know right know

What will it be

I don't want to wait

For our lives to be over

Will it be yes or will it be

Sorry
"

Then I remembered, Miley Cyrus', See You Again. In it, she says, "I Feel Like I Must Have Known You

In Another Life

'Cause I Felt This Deep Connection

When You Looked In My Eyes
"

Also, while this isn't about reincarnation, I thought it might be somewhat relevant. Blue Oyster Cult's, Don't Fear the Reaper. I will include a small bit of lyrics from it.

"All our times have come

Here but now they're gone

Seasons don't fear the reaper

Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain..we can be like they are

Come on baby...don't fear the reaper....
"

And

"Romeo and Juliet

Are together in eternity...
"

Also, while I don't think they meant to suggest reincarnation, Savage Garden's, I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You could be thought of in that way due to the title and the same line in the song.

I decided to search for others and found there is a song, Reincarnation of a Love Bird was done by Charlie Mingus and some others I think (dunno who first did it), but it seems it is purely instrumental. Also instrumental, apparently there is a song by Ennico Morricone called A Mozart Reincarnated.

Also, I hadn't heard this particular Toad the Wet Sprocket song, but they did one called Reincarnation Song.

Here are some lyric fragments:

"...so much baggage I brought with me to leave

something so big i can't understand from trying to i would go mad

so i hurry back to little earth for another life, another birth

another life another birth

mother?
"

And there turned out to be a mention of this on wikipedia. It mentioned these:

Notable popular songs or albums which refer to reincarnation include:

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg by Iron Maiden

The Reincarnation Song by Roy Zimmerman

Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation by Santana

The Reincarnation of Luna by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult

Highwayman by The Highwaymen

Tommy by The Who

"Galileo" by The Indigo Girls

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater

Champagne Supernova by Oasis

Jillian by Within Temptation, itself a recapturing of the central story of the Deverry cycle

Reincarnation by Deine Lakaien

El Paso City by Marty Robbins

Next Lifetime by Erykah Badu

And then I discovered, Paula Cole also has a song called, Hush, Hush, Hush.

Here is a piece of that:

"oh maybe next time

in the end you will be henry the VIII

wake up tomorrow

alexander the great

open your eyes in a

new life again

oh maybe next time

you'll be given a chance

hush hush hush

hush hush hush

hush hush hush

hush hush hush

hush
"

Like Carol in your above quote, I am quite fond of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and found them inspirational.
A while back I recieved the Stills Alone album and I loved how uncomplicated and acoustic it was. My favorite song is 'Treetop Flyer', and when I listen to it I can feel a sort of rebelliousness, as if I can imagine myself as a young man who was drafted into the Vietnam war, maybe against my own personal wishes, and afterward I kind of lived that gypsy life of illegal, specialized-flying deliveries. I get a strong feeling of something like longing mixed with nostalgia when he sings the line, "I love my airplane 'cause she's got style". I don't know, it resonates something in me, but I don't know what. When I was younger I was really fascinated with fighter planes and the airforce, I even thought about doing officer training after college. All of this is completely out of character for me, because in general I am anti-political and my people don't believe in fighting wars.

I never really thought about my slight obsession with the airforce and how that song affects me. I'm quite afraid of heights...But I love flying in planes.

Oh, Cloacina, I heard somewhere that Paula Cole believes strongly in reincarnation and that the video for I Don't Wanna Wait was meant to display that. I'm a quite a fan of her music as well.

the band Tool has some amazing songs that i can relate to reincarnation.

some good ones are:

*Parabol

*Parabola

*Lateralus

*Forty six & 2

*Reflection

my signature is some lyrics to Parabol

Here's a song I found by accident while looking for something else. It's called Circles and it's by George Harrison:

Friends come and friends go

As I go round and round in circles

Love someone change your mind

Decide he was a swine

As you go round and round in circles

He who knows does not speak

He who speaks does not know

And I go round in circles

Dislike someone and will not bend

Later they may become your best friend

As life it goes around in circles

He who knows does not speak

He who speaks does not know

And I go round in circles

Soul takes on a body with each birth we make our date

With life and death along the road the soul reincarnates

The show goes round and round in circles

When loss and gain and up and down

Becomes the same, then we stop going in circles

Round and round in circles

"Wheel Inside the Wheel" - Mary Gaultier

The parade of souls is marching across the sky

Their heat and their light bathed in blue as they march by

The All Stars play "When the Saints Go Marching In"

A second line forms and they wave white hankies in the wind

Satchmo takes a solo, and he flashes his million dollar smile

Marie Laveau promenades with Oscar Wilde

Big Funky Stella twirls her little red umbrella to the beat

As the soul parade winds its way down Eternity Street

Souls ain't born, souls don't die

Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky

So, ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel

And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Mardi Gras Indians chant in the streets at sundown

Spyboy meets Spyboy, and Big Chief meets Big Chief uptown

They circle and sway in their rainbow colored feathers and beads

They prance like peacocks, children of slavery freed

Souls ain't born, souls don't die

Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky

Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel

Roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

The Krewe of the Crossbones parades into the midnight sun

They march through the fire and come out beating homemade drums

While the French Quarter Queens in their high-heeled drag disguise

Sing "Over the Rainbow" 'til Judy Garland quivers and sighs

Souls ain't born, souls don't die

Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky

Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel

And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Flambeau dancers light the walkway to Jean Pierre's

There's a party tonight and all the girls are gonna be there

Sipping wormwood concoctions, drinking absinthe and talking trash

It's a red carpet, black tie, all night, celestial bash

Souls ain't born, souls don't die

Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky

Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel

And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

I said roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

What a fascinating thread - I had no idea so many song had reincarnation themes!

The song "Only One" by James Taylor has some lyrics which for years have always made me think of reincarnation:

And memories seem like dreams

hundreds of hopes in the past.

Nevertheless it was never the last.

Hold on strong or you'll fade out fast.

Great thread.

Here are a selection of songs I know of that speak of, or allude to reincarnation.

"Born on the Floor" by The Make Up

I was born, I was born
I was born, I was born on the floor.

x4

I was born in 1979.

I was just a look in my daddy's eye.

I put it into my mama's mind

to push me through her thighs.

I was enraged

with the black ops sent by the CIA.

I was packing things for Angola;

she said "No, you're just an embryo!"

When I came into this world,

I wanted to be premature.

I said "Mama, I gotta come out soon!"

I kicked against the womb.

I was born in 1961.

I was born to be a son of a gun.

a hot day in Dallas, my mother's water broke.

contractions started, but I was late to the show.

I was born in 1917

when the guns of October sowed my seed.

I was born in 1908

when my battleship was sittin' at the dock of the bay.

When I came into this world,

I wanted to be premature.

I kicked against the womb.

I said "Mama, I wanna come out soon!"

But by the time I was out,

it was twilight; we were shut down.

They cut my umbilical cord

and left me there; I was born on the floor.

I put that thought

into my mother's mind

and I put that look

into my daddy's eye.

I said "Mama,

you must create

a terrible baby they all fear

who destroys the State."

She delivered a bundle of joy

so full of righteous hate,

but by delivery time,

they spanked my behind and it was too late.

When I came into this world,

I wanted to be premature.

I kicked against the womb.

I said "Mama, I gotta come out soon!"

But by the time I was out,

it was twilight; we were shut down.

I was born, I was born

I was born, I was born on the floor.

When I came into this world,

I wanted to be premature.

I kicked against the womb.

I said "Mama, I gotta come out soon!"

But by the time I was out,

it was twilight; we were shut down.

They cut my umbilical cord

and left me there; I was born on the floor.

I was born, I was born

I was born, I was born on the floor.

I was born, I was born, I was born,

well, I was born, I was born on the floor.

whoa, born

well I was born on the floor.
"Inland Sea" by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead

Stay calm, stay calm
Relax your limbs gently float to earth

Hear the laughing of the Inland Sea

And know your mind is where you're meant to be

Wake up, wake up

Remind yourself exactly who you were

Is the price you've paid to live this little dream

Worth the pain you've been suffering?

The only way out is to go up

Take up your arms

Prepare yourself to face the whole world

Don't ask your friends for faith or company

They're none of them who they pretend to be
And finally, a great example, from one of my favourite bands, Tool.

"Parabola" by Tool

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside

This holy reality, this holy experience.

Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in

This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal

All this pain is an illusion.

Alive, I

In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in

This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal

All this pain is an illusion.

Twirling round with this familiar parabol.

Spinning, weaving round each new experience.

Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.

Embrace this moment. Remember. we are eternal.

All this pain is an illusion.

Tori Amos: Night of the Hunters

Tori Amos' new concept album 'Night of the Hunters' revolves around the idea of reincarnation and issues of our present lives being the result of decisions and/or traumas in previous ones.

This is from Wikipedia:

According to Amos, the concept centers on a woman who is left alone on the eve of her relationship's demise in an old Georgian house near the River Bandon, located on the outskirts of Kinsale, County Cork in Ireland. As dusk turns to night, the woman is confronted by Annabelle, a shapeshifting "childlike creature" who "emerges from nature", played by Amos' daughter. The mythical creature, representing "duality", as well as the ancient forces of "the hunter" and "the hunted", coaxes the woman to follow her into the night, transporting them both approximately three-thousand years into the past to witness a previous incarnation of the woman's relationship. It was a time of great chaos and violence in ancient Ireland as a war of beliefs raged on, and the woman and her lover fought side-by-side as bards, using the ancient tree alphabet as their only weapon.
Once the war was lost, however, the woman and her lover crossed the Atlantic on his sailboat, abandoning her world, the New World, in favor of his world, the Old World. It was during this time that forces, both within and outside of their control, drew the couple apart. After their sojourn into the past, Annabelle inducts the woman in an ancient peyote ritual which is meant to further expand her consciousness through both hallucinogenic and meditative means. During the ritual, Annabelle helps the woman realize how she abandoned her own fire and inner-strength when she left her world in favor of her lover's. The woman also sees how both she and her former lover interchangeably misused the ancient forces of "the hunter" and "the hunted" against one another throughout the course of their union. This self-destructive dynamic, in turn, also plagued the present-day incarnation of their relationship.

Once the ritual and woman's self-examination are complete, Annabelle reminds her of the perils and benefits found in using and misusing the ancient energies of "the hunter" and "the hunted". The creature also advises the woman that there are "forces" at work that must be dealt with and that she must leave her so that she alone may face the Fire Muse, played by Amos' niece. In meeting the mythical goddess, the woman is allowed to recapture the fire and inner-strength she had abandoned, both in her past and present incarnations, and is taught about the "light" and "dark" forces of the world at large.

The Fire Muse reminds the woman that more than just her own mortal pains and desires are of concern and, together, as the fiery goddess calls upon the woman to see the world from a higher perspective, they weave a spell to protect the light of the world from the forces of darkness. The woman ends her journey at dawn, renewed and grateful for her place in the world and for all of the people that have inhabited her life, including her former lover.
The music is based on old classical pieces and the songs are told like a story with both Amos' daughter and niece making appearance as 'Annabelle' and 'the Fire Muse' respectively.

I'm generally a fan of Tori Amos, so of course I am biased, but I think that this is one of her strongest works. I love the idea of the concept album and telling of a story where each song is a "chapter", combining this with reincarnation and Irish mythology it's a winner to me :D

Just thought I'd share it!

A couple of my favorite songs conjure up the idea of reincarnation, to me. One is

Also, if you watch the video, you'll notice that it's the same people that play both men and women. I can relate to that as well!

This song is on the new album by Kate Bush (50 Words For Snow), and it's called 'Snowed in at Wheeler Street':

Excuse me I'm sorry to bother you,
But don't I know you?

There's just something about you.

Haven't we met before?

We've been in love forever.

When we got to the top of the hill,

We saw Rome burning.

I just let you walk away.

I've never forgiven myself.

I saw you on the steps in Paris.

You were with someone else.

Couldn't you see, that should've been me.

I just walked on by.

Then we met in '42,

But we were on different sides.

I hid you under my bed,

But they took you away.

I lost you in a London smog,

As you crossed the lane.

I never know where you're gonna be next

But I know that you'll surprise me.

Come with me, I'll find some rope

I'll tie us together.

I've been waiting for you so long…

I don't want to lose you again…

Don't walk into the crowd again.

Don't walk away again.

I don't want to lose you!

I don't want to lose you!

I don't want to lose you again!

There's just something about you,

Have we been in love forever?

9/11 in New York.

I took your photograph.

I still have your smiling face,

In a heart-shaped frame.

Snowed in at Wheeler street.

Just two old flames.

Keeping the fire going.

We look so good together.

Can't we just stay there forever?

We were so happy!

I'd live that day over and over.

But the world won't stop turning.

When we got to the top of the hill,

We saw Rome burning.

I don't want to lose you…

I don't want lose you again!

Don't walk away again.

Don't leave me lost again.

Don't want to lose you!

I don't want to lose you!

I don't want to lose you again!!

Don't want to lose you…

I don't want to lose you!

I don't want to lose you again!!

Oh no not again. No! No! Not again!

Not again! Not again!

No! No! No! No! Not again!

Not again!

Never again!

I've been wanting to share this for the longest time. It's an old song by Tommy Shaw and Dennis Deyoung of Styx.

Haven't We Been Here Before
Written by Tommy Shaw

Lead Vocals by Tommy Shaw

Haven't we been here before

Footsteps lead down to the note on the door

That says I can't stay here anymore

And haven't we felt this same way

Sure in our hearts, but afraid just the same

To say I can't stay one minute more

You might think that it's hopeless

Beyond our control

But that's not necessarily so

Can't you see there's a chance

For the daring young soul

Who's finally learned to say no

No, I won't be misused

Ignored or refused

And I won't just give up and let go

So tonight hold me close to you

And don't give up what's important to you

And as time rolls on

Nothing can stand in our way

And I believe if we learn from the past

We'd find keys to unlock every door

Dark would turn into light

We'd be strong

We'd be right

So tonight hold me close to you

And don't give up what's important to you

And as time rolls on

Nothing will stand in our way

And I believe if we learn from the past

We'd say haven't we been here before

Oh, and I believe if we open our hearts

We'd find keys to unlock every door

Hearts could change overnight

We'd be strong...We'd be right

So stay with me now

The future is ours

And we'll be the ones who go on
In the video, there are two men standing in back of a huge swinging pendulum. One man is from the past and the other is from the present. The video focuses on a moment in the life of the man in the past 1920's and then shows the man in the present time. Sometimes, the man in the present sits on the pendulum as it swings, and at other times, there is a child sitting on the pendulum. Very interesting video that, in my opinion, might have a reference to past lives.

Unfortunately, the video has been removed from YouTube. :(

I'm not sure whether it's something to do with reincarnation but its sounds like it. This song is Don't Stop Believing by Journey, especially this part:

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill

Payin' anything to roll the dice,

Just one more time

Some will win, some will lose

Some were born to sing the blues

Oh, the movie never ends

It goes on and on and on and on

Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder and Covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

People keep on learnin'

Soldiers keep on warrin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

Powers keep on lyin'

While your people keep on dyin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

I'm so darn glad he let me try it again

Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin

I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then

Gonna keep on tryin'

Till I reach the highest ground

Teachers keep on teachin'

Preachers keep on preachin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

Oh no

Lovers keep on lovin'

Believers keep on believin'

Sleepers just stop sleepin'

Cause it won't be too long

Oh no

I'm so glad that he let me try it again

Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin

I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then

Gonna keep on tryin'

Till I reach my highest ground...Whew!

Till I reach my highest ground

No one's gonna bring me down

Oh no

Till I reach my highest ground

Don't you let nobody bring you down (they'll sho 'nuff try)

God is gonna show you higher ground

He's the only friend you have around

Link to Chili Peppers version (this is the one that popped into my mind when I saw this topic)

Reincarnation Song

I thought I'd be alright today

I thought I'd be alive today

Give me your eyes, I'll show you things

You never dreamed you thought you'd see

I found myself in a light I'd seen in sleep sometimes or mescaline

and like the sun you can't stare into very long without it blinding you

I thought this light would comfort me

I thought it would be easy

But there's a tugging at my sleeve

so much baggage I brought with me to leave

something so big i can't understand from trying to i would go mad

so i hurry back to little earth for another life, another birth

another life another birth

mother?

"I Might Have Been Queen" by Tina Turner

I`M A NEW PAIR OF EYES

EVERY TIME I AM BORN

AN ORIGINAL MIND

BECAUSE I JUST DIED

I`M SCANNING THE HORIZON

FOR SOMEONE RECOGNIZING

THAT I MIGHT HAVE BEEN QUEEN

FOR EVERY SUN THAT SETS

THERE IS A NEW ONE DAWNING

FOR EVERY EMPIRE CRUSHED

THERE IS A NEW NATION

LET THE WATERS RISE

I HAVE RIDDEN EACH TIDE

FROM THE GATES OF THE CITY

WHERE THE FIRST BORN DIED

AND I MIGHT HAVE BEEN QUEEN

I REMEMBER THE GIRL IN THE FIELDS WITH NO NAME

SHE HAD A LOVE

OH BUT THE RIVERS WON`T STOP FOR ME

I`M A NEW PAIR OF EYES

AN ORIGINAL MIND

WITH MY SENSES OF OLD

AND THE HEART OF A GIANT

AND I`M SEARCHING THROUGH THE WRECKAGE

FOR SOME RECOLLECTION

THAT I MIGHT HAVE BEEN QUEEN

FOR EVERY SAGE THAT FALLS

THERE IS AN ANCIENT CHILD

AND I MIGHT HAVE BEEN QUEEN

I REMEMBER THE GIRL IN THE FIELDS WITH NO NAME

SHE HAD A LOVE

OOOOOH BUT THE RIVERS WON`T STOP FOR ME

NO, THE RIVERS WON`T STOP FOR ME

I LOOK UP TO THE STARS

WITH MY PERFECT MEMORY

I LOOK THROUGH IT ALL

AND MY FUTURE`S NO SHOCK TO ME

I LOOK DOWN BUT I SEE NO TRAGEDY

I LOOK UP TO MY PAST

A SPIRIT RUNNING FREE

I LOOK DOWN AND I`M THERE IN HISTORY

I`M A SOUL SURVIVOR

A SOUL SURVIVOR

ON THE RIVER

BUT IT WON`T STOP

I`M A SOUL SURVIVOR

ON THE RIVER

BUT IT WON`T STOP

I MIGHT HAVE BEEN QUEEN

I KNOW THE SECRET COMBINATION

I`M A SOUL SURVIVOR
And though the question was asked back in '05 according to the tag, the song is "Where Or When", by Dion & the Belmonts, and it's more of an elaborate take on the pick-up line "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" Pretty romantic to take it to reincarnation, though!

This is a song that I don't think anyone has ever heard (unless you're into Japanese music ). It's from a musical and has a slight reference to reincarnation. I tried to translate to the best of my ability but the meaning in some parts might seem a bit awkward because some phrases were difficult to properly translate into English.

The lead character is dying and this is his final goodbye to his beloved younger brother.

"Thank You."

I'm really glad that I was able to meet you, even though it's goodbye now.

And even though I'm going to a faraway place, I'll never forget you.

Your smiling face (in my eyes)

That gentleness (It burns into my memories)

It passes by me like the seasons.

Even when the painful moments come to us, there's no turning back.

If this is the end for me, without hesitation, I'll say to you, "Thank you, thank you."

If we were to be born again, even though we may not recognise each other,

If we were to meet again, it would surely be wonderful, wouldn't it?

It we were to meet again, it would be wonderful, wouldn't it?

Kind of funny, but certainly using reincarnation as the theme..."It's all been done" by the Bare Naked Ladies":

I met you before the fall of Rome,

And I begged you to let me take you home,

You were wrong, I was right,

You said goodbye, I said good night,

It's all been done,

It's all been done,

It's all been done before.

I knew you before the west was won,

And I heard you say "the past was much more fun",

You go your way, I'll go mine,

But I'll see you here next time,

It's all been done,

It's all been done,

It's all been done before.

Alone and bored on a thirtieth century night,

Will I see you on the Price Is Right?

Will I cry? Will I smile?

As you run down the aisle?

It's all been done,

It's all been done,

It's all been done before!

I really hope someone here knows the band Marillion, they come from England but I know they've been touring in the USA now and then.

Their song "Fantastic place" got to my soul since the very first time I heard it. Here are the lyrics:

Quote:

"It’s always a struggle

to let somebody go

It’s a natural desire

to own your lover, I know

And you can screw a man down

until he takes to drinking

He’ll give you all of his money

You still won’t know what he’s thinking

Take me to the fantastic place

keep the rest of my life away

Take me to the fantastic place

Keep the rest of my life away

Take me to the island

I’ll watch the rain over your shoulder

The streetlights in the water

The moment outside of real life

I never could dream while I was sleeping

Put your arms around my soul

and take it dancing

Say you understand me

And I will leave myself completely

Forgive me if I stare

But I can see the island behind your tired,

troubled eyes

Take me to the island

I’ll tell you all I never told you

The boy I never showed you

More than I gave in my life

Take me by the hand

You’ll either kill me or you’ll save me

Take me to the island

Show me what might be real life"

I dedicate it for all those who feel this emptiness and loneliness inside (like me), those who feel they don't belong here and this is not our "real life".

And when you see "that island" in some other's eyes must be that sense of recognition that tells us we've known each other before...

I don't think it's exactly about reincarnation, or at least I've never thought it was, I only wanted to say I'm so glad someone as young as you and in that part of the world knows about Journey, it's one of my top ten favourites of all time!!

When I was growing up I knew a lot of music bands no one in Spain had ever heard of (thanks to my eldest brother), and so I felt a bit "alone" at this.
